Opting Out of Credit Card Offers

Marketing is a powerful force, and it is often hard to resist the commercials and catchy jingles for the thousands of consumer products that are out in the marketplace. Credit card companies are no strangers to marketing and have thought up many creative ways to entice us to sign up for their latest and greatest card offer.

One of the challenges New Yorkers face when it comes to navigating the marketplace is sorting through the piles of credit card solicitations we receive in our mailboxes every day. While some of us enjoy receiving these offers, because they give us a way to comparison shop for a credit card with a better rate, others have a hard time resisting the temptation and would be better off if these mailings would stop altogether.

  • If you’re interested in opting out of receiving these offers in your mailbox, you can call 1 (888) 5-OPT-OUT. This is the credit reporting industry’s opt-in/opt-out resource. By electing to “opt out” you are stopping the four major credit reporting agencies from selling your information to direct marketers. You can always opt back in if you decide you want to receive these offers again.
  • Register with the Federal Trade Commission’s Do Not Call Registry by calling 1 (888) 382-1222 or visiting their website created specifically for this purpose. Registration with the Do Not Call Registry does not expire.
