Help & Resources for Members of the Military

Did You Know?

The City of New York offers a property tax exemption for veterans. New York State allows each county, city, town and village (municipality) to decide whether or not to grant a property tax exemption under the alternative veterans exemption program. Check with your assessor or clerk to determine if your municipality offers this exemption.

Parents of soldiers killed while on active duty are known as Gold Star parents. Gold Star Parents who meet certain income qualification may be eligible for an annuity payment of up to $500 per parent from the State.

New Yorkers have repeatedly answered our nation’s call to service. According to the Veterans Administration (VA), more than 1 million veterans have chosen to make our State their home, and thousands more live and work here as a result of their active duty service or service in the Guard or Reserves.

Regardless of when you’ve served, veterans, military members and their families face unique financial challenges. In response, New York State has developed many special programs designed to ease the financial burden of those deployed, to assist in the transition of those returning to civilian life after their service, and to care for our aging veteran population. Many of these programs can be accessed here.

As part of Your Money New York, we’ve put together a list of specific resources that address the varied and diverse financial needs of our military and veteran population.
